Saddam – The end of an era

30saddam1.jpgFor as long as I have read about Iraq, Saddam Hussein has been the only name that I can associate with that country. With American invasion of Iraq and capturing of Saddam Hussein, people were left to wonder why was he not shot dead till now. America for once wanted to glamorise the justice process that it has instated in Iraq. I never really was bothered why America invaded Iraq, went about killing enough people, and calling the process as fight against terrorism. However I feel sad about the way execution of Saddam was carried out. In less than 60 days he was sent to the gallows, and hung a day before the New Year’s eve, it clearly showed how America made mockery of the judicial system in Iraq. As someone quite rightly said:

Today marks the end of an evil era, the end of an evil era and the beginning of an even worse one

R.I.P Saddam

Poor Boy .Mac

.Mac (dot Mac) membership is surely the first thing a new apple user is attracted to. More than just a cool email that describes you as a mac user, it also provides webdav based backup disk, sync profiles and lot more. But all this comes for a cost, at about $70. In today’s world, when companies offer much cheaper solutions at almost half the cost, the only thing about .mac membership is its inbuilt integration to OS X operating system. For those who can understand and afford few extra mouse clicks, and some semi-technical details, Derek offers an insightful read on “Poor boy Apple Dot Mac alternatives“. The article, like any other technical reviews at 5thirtyone, is a brilliantly composed piece providing a good user perspective to technologies that offer backup and sync services.

Hicksdesign is finally growing

Leigh Hicks joins one-man-mighty-design army Jon Hicks to be part of Hicksdesign. I am sure the next year will be filled with several eye-candy releases from Hicks factory.

Microformats on Firefox

operator

Operator lets you combine pieces of information on Web sites with applications in ways that are useful. For instance, Flickr + Google Maps, Upcoming.org + Google Calendar, Yahoo! Local + your address book, and many more possibilities and permutations. All of these scenarios are possible due to Microformats, an emerging standard for injecting semantics into HTML.

Noise for Mac

noiseI often feel a pain to work in public places, especially in Delhi, where people just don’t have a volume control planted in their voice boxes. It’s quite bugging to sit in Barista/Costa Coffee/Any Other coffee joint, paying for expensive WiFi service, and getting distracted while working because some dude wants to laugh/giggle/talk at 60dB. I always wondered if there can be a mp3 file that emits silence so as to dissolve the nagging background noise at public places. While looking for alternatives, I stumbled upon DSP generation of Pink (1/f) Noise project by Robin White, but there was no implementation in form of a software/track that I could use.

With the launch of Noise application by Blackhole Media, the problem seems to be solved. It will take time to get used to sound emitted by Noise, but at least it saves you from getting distracted from those boring/interesting gossips at the table behind you.

Disco

disco

Disco is great little app to burn discs on mac. After trying it out for only a couple of times, I can confidently think about staying with this for a while. No extreme resource usage, great smoke effects, easy to use UI and just under $15.. it can’t get better than this.

Redesigning the Site

While everyone is redesigning their sites, I decided for once to write something for Colophon section. I also added a funny looking pic, which Subir thinks is quite a misfit. On a related note, I wonder if you noticed a few design changes – I changed my wordpress theme and hacked the original KKP-Light Theme to appear orange at some places.

iPod Shuffle

ShuffleI was too contended with my 20GB clickwheel iPod to think about buying any other mp3 player. Ever since new iPod Shuffle was launched, I just could not resist myself from getting my hands on it. Today when I got the new iPod shuffle, I am not too surprised to see the packing, the player and the small dock that comes with it.

Why can’t apple open a store in Delhi so I can spend my savings on such lean-mean white pieces of brilliance?
