Wget and Netcat are one of the few old skool unix utilities that still make your life simpler. These are two of of the very few that have not been replaced by GUI based programs, and still provide a robust functionality.
Gina Trapani (of Lifehacker) provides a simple yet comprehensive tutorial on Wget and Netcat. The tutorials do not assume you to be a geek, just requires you to read English and follow steps.
